AWIC translates books by Julia Donaldson for Pan Macmillan in 2020
AWIC members translated four books for children by Julia Donaldson into four Indian languages, ie Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Marathi. Thus sixteen books in all were translated for the publisher, Pan Macmillan. The books that were translated were: The Gruffalo, A Squash and a Squeeze, Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle.
The illustrations and design of the original English books were retained. The translators, all authors of children’s books in India, transcreated the books for Indian children taking care to have the text replete with rhyme, rythmn and fun elements.
Considering that the project was undertaken and completed at a time when the world was reeling under the Corona pandemic, this was indeed a job well done. Both translators and editors from AWIC worked in this project which was co-ordinated by Nita Berry, the head of the editorial at AWIC.
The translated books provide an opportunity for Indian children to enjoy an internationally acclaimed author in their own language, helping to connect the world. The books will be printed in October 2020.
